Death of Colonel Suit. Dropsy of the Heart Carries Away a Well-Known Resident. Col S. Taylor Suit, ... died this morning at his residence, 238 New Jersey ave, n.w. of dropsy of the heart. He had been sick since last May, and for the past two weeks has grown steadily worse, ... His family, consisting of wife, three children & nephew were around his bedside at his demise.
Col Suit was born in Prince George County MD in 1832 & at an early age went to Keokuk, IA. There there he went to Louisville and thence to New York, where he was a prominent figure on Wall street before & during the war. At the close of hostilities he opened the First National Bank of VA at Richmond, and was its president. It was in 1865 that he came to Washington.
Here he invested largely in suburban property, owning “Suitland” and other large suburban tracts. During the later years of his life he was engaged in railroad enterprises and was president of a syndicate proposing to build a road from Washington to Chesapeake Bay. He was one of the judges at the Philadelphia Centennial and took a prominent part in that event. Col Suit was widely known in Washington & vicinity and leaves many warm frieds (sic) who will be surprised and shocked at his death.

Fire At Suitland - Six months ago Col. S. Taylor Suit’s fine mansion, at Suitland MD, & everything in it was destroyed by fire. Thursday, about noon, his fine two-story mansard-roof stable, several carriages, harness & several horses, including his beautiful white stallion, which he imported several years ago from Iceland, & which took the premium at the Centennial, was destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated at $10,000, without a dollar of insurance. Some eight or ten men were working within 100 yards of the stable. None of them can account for the disaster.

Washington & Chesapeake Road. Col S. Taylor Suit, who was in Baltimore yesterday, was enthusiastic over the progress of the Washington & Chesapeake Railroad enterprise. He said men are at work night and day, and the rights of way have all been secured from Fishing Creek to Plum Point When finished passengers from Baltimore via the Baltimore & Ohio or Baltimore & Potomac and the new road can reach Chesapeake Beach in an hour and a-half, and Washington people can get to that new resort in 45 minutes. Col Suit considers the Southern MD Railroad enterprise to be practically dead, at least at the present time, and the Washington & Point Lookout Road in not much better condition. He said that after the expenditure of $400,000 he is prepared to abandon them, so far as he is concerned.

What the People Favor. There was unanimity of opinion among the gentlemen at last night’s meeting that another method of selecting a committee should be adopted. In questioning them on what plan would be the most satisfactory, they said that each section of the city should be allowed to hold a meeting to select its representative men, and that these should be sent to represent the interests of their respective localities, and that the committee of 100 should be selected from among them. There was considerable feeling against the alleged attempt to ignore the southern and eastern sections in the selection of last week’s committee.
“We don’t want such a committee, and we won’t have it, and if it is necessary we will fight,” said S. Taylor Suit this morning. “I own as much land in and about Washington as any five of them.” he continued, heating up a little. “I’ve had a score of the solid citizens of Washington to come to me and protest against the way in which that committee was selected,” he continued. “We don’t want ninety-seven men out of a hundred from one section. The very idea of issuing a call one day and holding a meeting the next to select a committee, is absurd. If they give us sufficient time we may get a committee that will be a credit to the object for which it is selected.” He stated that a committee had been appointed to wait on Mr. W. W. Corcoran to ascertain whether he had authorized his name to be used at the last week’s meeting.

A Suburban Street Railway. The Commissioners have received a letter from Colonel S. Taylor Suit, in which he states that it is the desire of himself and other gentlemen to establish a suburban passenger railroad, beginning at the junction of H Street northeast with MD avenue and Boundary street, thence running along the Bladensburg road to the District line, and before asking Congress to charter the road they desire to know if there is any objection on the part of the Commissioners. It is propose to use horse or other motive power, excepting steam.
